We at the Jazz-On-Line website are dedicated to the preservation of the Jazz music of the early twentieth century. Many of these recordings were made on fragile, 78-RPM, shellac discs and exist only in the collections of some contributors to this website.

To find a tune... You may search for a recording by typing the first and last name of the artist of your choice. For example, typing ''Artie Shaw'' or ''Louis Armstrong'' will yield more specific results than typing only the first name or the last. Typing ''Louis'' alone will bring up all recordings by anyone whose name is ''Louis'' and not only those by Mr. Armstrong. Also, specific groupings of letters or portions of words can bring up unexpected results. For example, typing ''stra'' could bring up any word containing these letters such as ''Orchestra'', ''Stravinsky'' or ''Turkey in the Straw''. We have improved the search function to enable the use of apostrophes (') which so frequently occur in Jazz music titles. It is no longer necessary to avoid using apostrophes. For example, you can include contractions such as Don't, Couldn't, Wouldn't, Shouldn't and many others. Quotation marks ('') cannot be used in the search, though some users have enjoyed success typing 2 apostrophes side-by-side to simulate quotation marks. This will work only in some cases, not all. When typing titles in the Title field, you can include 1, 2, 3, or 4 words with a single space between each of them. You must type a minimum of 3 characters (4 is better) for the search to effectively work. If fewer characters are used, you will obtain a random sampling of titles, artists and record company labels which may be desirable if you are only browsing to discover items you may not have previously known existed.
